Why the name? Because the best revenge is to live well! Or another way of putting it: Illegitimi non carborundum (don’t let the bastards grind you down)!
I have sometimes served this cocktail without telling my guests what is in it – because many people say they don’t like scotch – but they like this cocktail.
Note that there is one do-ahead step (the syrup)
1 ½ ounces blended Scotch
¾ ounce fresh lemon juice
1 ½ teaspoons St. Elizabeth allspice dram
1 Tablespoon Leopold Bros Michigan tart cherry liqueur *
1 Tablespoon hibiscus honey syrup (see below)
Put all ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake well, strain into an “up” glass, garnish with a slice of lemon.
*If you can’t find the Leopold Bros liqueur, may substitute Heering cherry liqueur. This will make the drink a bit sweeter. But don’t skimp on the allspice dram!
Hibiscus honey syrup
2 tablespoons dried red hibiscus flowers
1/4 cup honey
Pour half a cup of boiling water over the hibiscus flowers and let steep for five minutes. Strain, then mix 1/4 cup of the hibiscus water with the honey while it is still hot. This will make enough for 7 to 8 cocktails. It can be stored in the refrigerator in a jar with a lid for a week or longer.
Dried hibiscus flowers maybe found at spice shops, health food stores, or Mexican/Caribbean specialty stores. If you cannot find the plain hibiscus flowers, you can use two hibiscus teabags instead.
